THE LITTLE DETAILS

A few questions.

Which format is the smallest?

Stacked AV1. A 5 second, 360 px loop at 24 fps is about 145 KB as AV1, 495 KB as WebM, 910 KB as animated WebP and 3.9 MB as a GIF.

How accurate is it?

WebM, HEVC, stacked MP4 and AV1 come from 211 Masko files measured in October 2026. GIF, WebP and Lottie are estimates from six Masko loops encoded with ffmpeg.

Why is GIF so heavy?

256 colours per frame, hard-edged transparency and old compression.

Why is a Lottie heavy here?

A Lottie made from a video holds one picture per frame.

Which format should my app use?

It depends on where your animation plays. The measured sizes show each format next to the platforms that play it.
